Information Blocking Power Hour – Turning Real Advocate Roadblocks into Formal Complaints
March 2026 Are you ready to move from frustration to action? Watch this working session hosted by APHA, led by Primary Record founder Jean Ross. Using real-world cases – such as missing test results, proxy access barriers, failed fax loops, and incomplete record transfers – we clarify what truly qualifies as information blocking. You will learn how to document issues, and how to draft and file a formal complaint. The session also covers how consumer apps and patient-access APIs fit into the enforcement landscape and what to expect as information blocking oversight evolves in 2026. This course has been approved for 1 Ethics CE by the Patient Advocate Certification Board. Click here to complete the evaluation for your CE credit. I am so glad you are being so thoughtful in your approach!
I agree that shadowing other advocates would be very valuable. Many are happy to share techniques and strategies they use in their business. Sometimes setting up opportunities like this are more of a mentorship relationship so if you find yourself unable to find someone to “shadow” you…[Read more]

Hi Stephanie,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful post! I thought about all of the things you mentioned above and realized I may be jumping in too soon. Although I am currently working in an advocate role, launching independently carries greater professional responsibility as you mentioned and I want to do it the right way, and at the right…[Read more]

Hi Jackie!
It is very exciting to have people reach out to you for advocacy support already! That really says a lot about the trust people have in you.
Many people who move into independent advocacy have already been helping family or friends navigate healthcare, and it often starts pretty organically, just wanting to help someone. Over time, it…[Read more]

Hi everyone:
I had an interesting idea about taking a few “pilot” patients before launching my independent advocacy practice. Recently I had two people approach me and ask to support someone they know. Question: If I speak to someone who needs help with advocacy services, should I sign a confidentiality agreement first? I know that they will…[Read more]

Thank you for your message, Kim!
I am sorry that I missed seeing this until now, I was on spring break with my family and failed to check the Discussion Forum 🙁
There should be a lesson for Overcoming Objections and you should not have to pay for it. I am reaching out to our Technical Director to get more information on that link. Thank you so…[Read more]

Helping the Helpers – Learn about Inciteful Med
March 2026 In an era of widespread health misinformation, finding credible, research-backed information can be challenging for both patients and advocates. In this session, Inciteful Med co-founder Erika Warren demonstrates how the platform connects a patient’s specific health context directly to the scientific literature. Advocates will learn how to use the tool to explore diagnoses, review treatment options, prepare for appointments, and identify relevant clinical trials — with results fully cited to peer-reviewed research or the patient’s own records. This session introduces a practical resource for grounding advocacy work in reliable evidence. I’ve run into this with my own healthcare. Some offices are just bleep at handling referrals. Personally, I’ve found that the worse they are at handling referrals, the more that behavior type will carry over to how patient care is handled.

Hi all,
I have a client who had a referral sent to 2 providers at MGB in Boston as well as a different provider outside of MGB. MGB call staff of these 2 groups are saying there is no referral, and the other outside group has received the referral.
Because these referrals were so important, I actually sat on the phone with the person of the…[Read more]
