My guess is that asking for the driver’s license, esp if the request came from the malpractice company, is a way to prevent medical identity theft, a problem that has been growing over the past many years. In fact, my dad was a victim in 2008 – which he discovered when he began getting EOBs for a broken leg – which he didn’t have. (Eventually that…[Read more]

Hi Sammie:
Did the office manager indicate how the copies of the drivers licenses are stored so that one’s privacy is protected? I’m curious which malpractice provider is ‘requesting’ this practice.Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque is the best option.

I assume their malpractice insurance company wants to be able to prove the claims they submitted to health insurance carriers was for from actual patients not fictitious ones.

Never heard of this before, thank you for bringing this up to everyone’s attention. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Still feels a bit of an overreach for the purpose? Are they implying that enough people pause as patients to receive care they do not pay for??

Yesterday, while at a healthcare provider’s office, I was told by a staff member that they are now required to keep a copy of my driver’s license on file as part of HIPAA. I explained that I am a Nurse Practitioner and had never heard of this addendum to the HIPAA law.
After a long discussion with the office manager, I was told that their…[Read more]

Hi, I have a client who lives in New Mexico and states that the medical care there is not very good. She needs specialists for her daughter: Cardiologist, rheumotologist and possibly GI. Does anyone have recommendations on a place where she can get care coordination with 2-3 doctors in New Mexico? She really wants to go to Mayo in Phoenix but…[Read more]

Katy,
Great question! I am unclear in this area as well and the insurance company I contacted for liability didn’t really know either. I’m looking forward to hearing from others’ experiences.
Thanks for posting!

Concern: Insurance speaker spoke about reaching out to NSO (or whatever malpractice insurance you hold) and ask them questions because if certain insurances are written a certain way, they can…[Read more] -

Hi Katy,
I understand exactly what you are saying as I was also contract stuck a few months ago. I had a FL Business attorney review the APHA and another contract I’d received. Although I was hoping he would condense it and make the language more user friendly, he added more legal information and recommended having an Exhibit A where every…[Read more]

Hi Katy. Congratulations on the launch of your business. It’s gratifying to see all that hard work finally come to fruition.
I used a lawyer in Phoenix who is well versed on what PAs do, if you’d like their name. Although he’s in Arizona, he may be able to California-ize them to fit your needs.
