Great news! When you are as passionate about advocacy as you, and after, may I use the term, brief sabbatical, wholeheartedly agree with your husband (sometimes they’re right😂), I’m not sure advocates ever really retire….when you still have so much to offer!

Schandelle – I know he has spoken to several of us. In my case, we spoke a couple of times, he asked me to prepare my paperwork and send it to him (which I did) so he and his wife could look it over. I heard nothing until a week later when he reached out again to say he was looking forward to talking with me again. I emailed back to apologize if…[Read more]

Any updates on this? Probably not an appropriate case for me but maybe someone else can respond.

Hello Melanie,
I’m based in northern California (Oakland) and have extensive experience with this as well. My background is in managing Supported Living Services and group homes for adults with disabilities. I’ve helped many clients establish, maintain, resume, and re-claim benefits. While Michael is right, and it can be done remotely, feel free…[Read more]

I agree with Linda Beck. You could do a lot of work and find out the family has no authority to pay you, or a family member challenges your decisions. Sticky and messy at this point.
Let the family get their ducks in a row before you do anything. These are legal issues best untangled by an expert. -

Katy – this situation sounds like a mess I would avoid. I wouldn’t provide services for the “client” without documentation of the family’s legal authority to act on behalf of the “client.” You could possibly provide services for the family – like advice on how they can assist their loved one – but it sounds to me like they need to work with an…[Read more]

Hi – I desperately need to contact the web designer I used years ago – Miranda Hebert at Local Impact. I believe her mother is an APHA member and suggested her. I have tried all the email and phone numbers I have or can find for her, including what looks like her current business page, with no success. If anyone knows Miranda or Local Impact…[Read more]

I agree with the other responses. I once declined working with a family/client because they could not produce adequate documentation regarding the client’s mental capacity and they were also not forthcoming about pertinent details. Let’s just say I got a bad feeling. Thankfully, it was not an urgent/emergent situation.

I’m a California advocate! I live in San Diego! My name is Gabrielle Hochberg. I have done consulting for a large disability company and have had 2 family members with disabilities. Please let me know if you still need assistance?

Yes-it is in the client’s and the family’s best interests to have a formalized document in place. Even if the PCP has evaluated and determined the client to be non-decisional, they may need a formalized Neuro-psych eval. That also helps with the POA/DPOA/Guardianship process.
We humans usually wait until waaaaay past the time we should to put…[Read more] -

Hi Michael,
Thank you so much for your response. I appreciate your insight and suggestions. I have reviewed the EOB, and it says the claim was denied because the provider was out of network. It does seem that Oscar’s network is more limited than most. My client lives in an inner suburb close to Atlanta, and the closest imaging center in network…[Read more]
