I am all the way on the other side of the country from CA. While I cannot be of direct help, I am a retired Mental Health professional. I have also have had to manage family members with geriatric psychiatric issues.
Geriatric psychiatry is a very highly specialized area of practice. Elders do not respond in the same way to medications as…[Read more]

Hi All,
The Consumer is reaching out on behalf of her sister, the Client, who is in a nursing facility recovering from hospitalization due to a foot injury. While there, she has been prescribed psychiatric medications for mental illness (bipolar and potentially other illness relating to paranoia) that had never been treated before. The medication…[Read more]

A current client is looking for local support near the Hackensack Hospital area in New Jersey. They will be trying to have surgery soon and would like someone local to support them with communication and other general support. I would be happy to pass along contact information to this client for anyone who is interested.

Hello,
I’m getting clients! Yay! But that has made me realize I need a secure email (I do have a secure fax) for clients that I don’t get through a healthcare platform. I’ve since signed up for hippomail but the first person (elderly) I used it with said they couldn’t figure out how to open the secure email. And now, I’m receiving medical…[Read more]

Hello Linda,
I am a pediatric health advocate who finds herself functioning as my 96 year old father’s health advocate. He has Alzheimer’s with agitation. He has been on anti-anxiety meds since he was admitted to hospice early this year (he has since been discharged). We have recently switched him to a bit stronger med. Why did we do this? My…[Read more] -

To Gabrielle’s point: Wait till the lobbyists get ahold of it. If it ever even goes to a vote, it won’t look anything like it looks right now.
During all the (ahem) discussion of federal “healthcare reform” in 2009-2011, lobbyists for insurers, health systems, and other profiteers averaged $1.4 million PER DAY in spending – and that was 2010…[Read more]

Hmmm. I’ve not heard of this facility, but am anxious to get your thoughts about its function as you hopefully proceed with your client.
Between Amazon Clinics popping up everywhere, and this Instacart founder funded venture, I’m curious for any experiences people have had with either.
Things are definitely changing…. -

Hi –
I have a new client who is trying to get her health plan to approve an OON exception for her to go to Metrodora Institute (https://www.metrodora.co) in Salt Lake City. They are a new facility (opened in March or April): “Metrodora Institute is a national medical and research center focused on advancing care and accelerating cures for…[Read more]

This article ran in today’s Washington Post
https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2023/07/30/dementia-alzheimers-emergency-room-visits/
No surprises in the article itself, but I found the comments enlightening. Many people posted to say that they supported the use of anti-psychotic drugs for loved ones with dementia; they considered the value…[Read more] -

This is a single payer system that the governor wants to Create by Jan 1, 2028. He’s getting money from the federal government to make this happen. Remember, this is only a bill, that must be approved and acted upon. There will be no risk taking by doctors and Medi-cal, Medicare, employer-funded insurance, and private insurance would be…[Read more]

I can’t say I’m surprised that this bill has been presented. I haven’t read it in its entirety, but plan to do this weekend.
The one thing that resonated most of all, and is one of the primary reasons we find ourselves here is in section e:
“ The report by the commission calls for the elimination of corporate profit-making as the basis o…[Read more] -
