AnnMarie – you raise a good point – the reminder that these sorts of services require some differing business needs, too – in addition to, and beyond the knowledge of how to work within them. It’s a recognition of that line between NOT making medical decisions, and becoming the medical decision maker. That requires changes to your contract,…[Read more]

I have been working with one such client over the past year. What started out as a down the road when I get sick arrangement quickly turned into active advocacy following an unexpected imaging test.
This client wisely identified a separate advocate to act as medical proxy–a service we do not provide.
HIPAA, contract and retainer were put in…[Read more]

Yikes – my mistake, Andrea! With apologies….
It’s fixed. I hadn’t opened the gate – the page was still reserved for the “Admin Only” – which is the status until I open it.
All set – the last lesson page will welcome you now 🙂

Cheryl – I think it would come up more often if we promoted it as an advocacy service.
We don’t hear about it because we aren’t talking about it 🙂 If we begin talking about it, then we’ll get attention over it – and advocates would be contacted for these services.
In fact, I could see making a big deal out of it – not just listing it, but…[Read more]

Gail, I am not a nurse but a medical sociologist and bioethicist by training. All are irrelevant to E&O insurance but vital to my day-to-day work.

Good for you R. Ruth! I too, have been having struggles and appreciate all of your posts on this topic. I don’t remember if I asked you, but are you an RN? Through Trisha’s suggestion I am now trying to get coverage through a nursing insurance program. I’m just waiting to hear back as to whether they will positively cover my advocacy work. It’s…[Read more]

Trisha, do you have a feel for how often this comes up? I’m not sure where it would go on that list.

Hi Sonja,
I work with rare disease patients and there is now some crossover from the Long Haulers. There are some long hauler clinics but I have heard talk that they may be closing and shifting the care back to PCPs.
If you haven’t already, I’d check out some of the patient-led groups such as Survivor Corp and Long hauler FB groups. Many of…[Read more]

Our last live lesson was held Tuesday with only a few of you in attendance, but yielding some excellent questions (and answers, too) – all in all a good hour together.
Find your last lesson and its associated resources listed on your cohort homepage: https://myapha.org/academy/homepage-f2021/
Overall this has been a great group – I thank you…[Read more]

Cheryl and Nicky – this is such a great idea – developing a list of possibilities for “future advocacy”…
In face, this sounds like a good service to list on our master list of services: https://advoconnection.com/advocacy-services/
Do you think it’s defined enough to go on that list?

Since I started this thread exactly one month ago, I am pleased to report that Kyle eventually came through for me. Once I had his attention — the challenge at hand — he pressed the key on his computer and Voila! My credit card was charged and that was that. The entire process may have taken him 90 seconds.
When the policy was in place, I…[Read more]

Hi Cheryl!
I really like the steps you have for emergency advocacy. I have had this happen, and I had to get involved right away over the phone with the social worker at the hospital. I had the patient call the social worker and tell them it was okay to talk to me on her behalf. They did not make her sign anything at that time. This may work as…[Read more] -

Andrea … do you mean do you get a discount on taking the exam itself? If so….
I don’t know that the PACBoard ever discounts the cost of taking the exam or being certified. I have never heard of them giving any discounts. However – you can reach out to them and ask, of course: http://www.pacboard.org
I can tell you that you can get a discount on…[Read more]

I would also like to take the board certification exam. Since we took this course do we get a discount when this course is completed?
Thank you!

I’ve been contacted by a few people who would like to establish an advocacy relationship in advance of need, for example in the case of an emergency. I’m curious how others have handled that, especially in terms of payment.
Here’s what I’m thinking of so far —
Steps would be:
1. Sign a contract.
2. Complete a HIPAA/Release of Information form…[Read more] -

Tara – well done on creating your four P’s – with one thought:
Your description of your public – saying “clients” is like saying “air” — it’s WAY too generic. “family caregivers with aging parents” is definitely a good focus. Can you identify other foci like that?
