If it were not for my mother’s persistence that “something is not right” she would most likely have fallen victim to ovarian cancer as well. She was diagnosed at stage one over a decade ago and is still going strong today! The work we do is SO IMPORTANT!
Thank you for sharing Linda!

As a lot of you may know, at hospital emergency rooms, most doctors do not take insurance. Well recently, a bipartisan group of legislators passed new consumer protection that covers nearly all routine care and medical services. This has been the law in California since 2017.
While news organizations are hailing this as great consumer…[Read more]

Both these stories break my heart – and yet neither one surprises me.
My mother-in-law (before I knew her) complained of stomach upset for over a year before the doctors did any more for her than to give her Welbutrin (if they couldn’t fix her stomach upset they could at least make her feel better about it)… and by the time they found her…[Read more]

Oh no! This is bad news for you both. I am so very sorry!
Linda – can you tell us what company held your registration? The fact that it could be hijacked reflects on their security. It would be helpful for us to know if you know and are willing to share the answer.

I also follow Sam and likely will buy her products when I have revenue as they are costly as a start-up cost. Her podcast though is really helpful https://www.samvanderwielen.com/

Oh no, Linda Beck. Sorry for your trouble. I just had my trademark application hijacked along with 5,500 other US trademarks. They cancelled my application in the final step, while i was awaiting USPTO attorney approval and I lost all the fees I had paid. A Pakistani company was responsible for the hack and the Trademark office rep told me this…[Read more]

A personal story is my sister-in-law who complained of shortness of breath, a cough, and had weight loss for close to a year. She thought she might have pneumonia but the doctors dismissed her complaint, saying it was probably lack of humidity in the air and they never did a chest xray. This week she was diagnosed with double lung cancer, liver…[Read more]

Thanks Nancy! I think the closest lawyer that would be relational to my proposed scope of practice (women/pediatrics) would be family law/estate planning. My understanding is that lawyers specializing in those areas don’t review business contracts as that would be outside of their scope of practice.

All – a client recently told me that my website was no longer available. He was right – my web address took me directly to a site with information about Burka Faso – not my area of expertise.
According to my web person, a company based in Japan got hold of the domain name even though all fees were paid and standard security was in place. She…[Read more] -

of the importance of advocacy in healthcare…
From an article in today’s Washington Post:
“Again and again, Hannah Catton told doctors something was wrong with her body. Again and again, she said, the doctors dismissed her concerns.”
Starting in 2018, this otherwise-healthy 24 year old woman reported what even I (not a medical professional)…[Read more] -
LBeck805 replied to the topic Taking a Poll- Do you have a Mediation clause in your Client Legal Agreement? in the forum General Conversation 3 years, 5 months ago
All good comments. I believe in mediation, too, however it’s something the parties can agree to at any time, so I do not write it into my contract. If a client isn’t paying and we haven’t been able to resolve the issue between us, I prefer small claims court for all the reasons Alison mentions.

Adding on to this thread – how have you found a lawyer to review your contracts? The ones I’ve asked to review templates indicated that it wouldn’t be worth their time and wanted larger engagements (retainers). I’m just starting out and so that isn’t something I need yet. Suggestions?
