I think of the Caretaker as the mortician. The two terms are commonly interchangeable and I don’t correct the person, I just proceed to use the term Caregiver and sometimes they pick up on the correct verbage and sometimess they don’t.
In the UK they use the term, “carers.” FWIW…. -

My client is whomever I am working on behalf of, unless it is a minor child. If it is someone who is incapable of making decisions, then I work with whoever has the POA and ascertain if the person in question has an AD or Trust that describes their wishes.
One example would be if a adult child is assisting a parent with Alzheimers/Dementia, the…[Read more]

Oh, boy…. the word “Established” is CPT Code-Speak I believe, but a 15? What terrible communication. For us females I guess it could be anything from a mammogram, pap smear, colonoscopy….
Please tell me what happens when you call your internist and tell them you need to make an appointment for an “Established 15.” LOL
I currently have a…[Read more] -

Good afternoon!
Last week, I was speaking with a fellow patient advocate, Nicole Broadhurst, about an astronomical medical bill that one of my potential client’s received. It was something crazy, like with insurance the procedure was going to be $11,500; however, she was told that with her insurance she would only be out about $1500.00. So to…[Read more]

I had to share this:
Dignity Health sent me a letter – a real letter, via US Mail. The first sentence after the greeting: “Our records indicate you are due for a repeat Established 15.” It goes on to state that “this procedure is very important…” for a variety of reasons – but nowhere does it name the procedure!
I figure they want me to…[Read more] -

Hello all,
My elderly clients are frequently diagnosed with and treated for UTIs. I found this article very informative; Dr. Kernison explains “if an older person has a positive urine culture but no symptoms, think long and hard before agreeing to treatment. And ask extra questions before spending time pursuing a urology…[Read more]

For me, if mom (grandma) is awake, alert, oriented, and competent, I would want her signed as a client, with the daughter as guarantor if appropriate. I do offer from-a-distance coaching type assistance at a lower rate. I make a clear distinction that in that case, they are to do the legwork and I just provide some direction. To date, no one has…[Read more]

Yes, yes, and yes! I’ve always disliked the term caretaker. Seems like what a gardener does w/ the grass.

Hi Lorelei,
What a great question. As I tried to answer, I realized that I needed to start with the definition of client. According to Dictionary.com, a client is a person or group that uses the professional advice or services of a lawyer, accountant, advertising agency, architect, etc.Using this definition, it seems possible for me to have…[Read more]

I searched for the studies you mentioned. The articles I found do not mention any tumors found on autopsy. Can you please post the reference? Thanks so much!

Christie – thanks for sharing your book!
Not only is it incredibly useful for caregivers who sometimes just don’t know what is appropriate to say, writing, then sharing your book is also an excellent example of making yourself an expert in the space -which will grow your reputation and standing in advocacy.
Well done 🙂

All- I just wrote an ebook titled, “Dear Loved One” on communication strategies for friends and family who don’t know what to say to loved ones facing a health scare or chronic illness. In it I share the AdvoConnection link to the directory. I shared it with Trisha and she suggested I pass it on. You can read the flipbook here – https://page.co/…[Read more]
