PERSONAL GOALS
I want to help others navigate through their healthcare journey because of my experience with patients and seeing many falling through the healthcare cracks if they have no one to advocate for them both at the bedside and in the office. Those who have family members and/or others speaking up on their behalf seem to fare much better.…[Read more] -

ADVOCACY SKILLS
As a Nurse and Nurse Practitioner with a primary focus on the Geriatric population (55+) I am basically very comfortable with my Advocacy Skills of over 35 years advocating for patients in various clinical settings. The only skill I see which I MUST delegate is the Billing and Claims Systems as I have very little to no experience…[Read more] -

Many thanks AnnMarie. We occasionally assist patients and their families when concerns about the quality of care escalate to the risk management level. We participate in care conferences and risk management meetings, where we diligently take notes to document discussions.
In many cases, clients choose to share these notes with their malpractice…[Read more]

Io,
I have worked with one medical malpractice attorney and his client. I have also worked with a disability attorney and two of his clients.
I have never been asked for my notes, nor have I had to testify.
The relationship hasn’t been any different from my other client relationships.
Since all my clients sign my HIPAA form, I would not…[Read more]

Thoughts on The Business of Being in Business
I will have a for-profit company.
LLC structure.
My business name will be specific enough to identify it as a private patient advocacy service but general enough to allow for expansion of services. Working it out.
The SBA website lists some important things I need to do including geographic…[Read more]

Thoughts about business goals:
PERSONAL GOALS
I was a patient in a hospital bed a long time ago when I had the thought that everyone could benefit from a kind of personal problem-solver while receiving care from clinicians. Eventually I learned about non-clinical patient advocacy and thought I would like to do that when no longer practicing…[Read more] -

Hi Ladies-
This is all too common of an occurrence-a provider mis documents something and it causes issues for patients when trying to get insurance or even a job! I have a lot of experience with medical record reviews and understand the back side (healthcare provider) of how this happens. I am happy to touch base with you to have a conversation…[Read more]

Hello everyone,
I would love to hear from advocates who have worked in some capacity with malpractice lawyers for issues related to their advocacy client’s care. We have had this type of engagement multiple times, and I would like to hear from others who have had experience with this regarding how they approach these engagements.
Is there any…[Read more]

Cheryl,
I spoke with this woman and we left it that she should file an appeal with the insurer that denied her life insurance. Aida said she had what she needed to do that. We left it that if she needed help with the appeal, she would come back to me.
My gut says cost is an issue for her and that is why she is still shopping around.
You are…[Read more]

Hi everyone, I’ve been in contact with a woman whose psychiatrist diagnosed her w/ alcohol dependency, which she and her PCP refute. The psychiatrist is not responding to any means of communication other than to tell her to not contact him again. As a result, she’s been turned down for life insurance.
I have sent her lots of information related…[Read more]

Hey everyone,
I have to admit that I found figuring out my budget to be a bit stressful. I don’t feel like I have all the information I need to complete the budget sheets. I feel like I’m becoming more and more aware of how much I don’t know. I am glad I’m getting all of this information now!
How was creating a budget for y’all?

Emily!
I am so glad you are getting so much out of the course already!
Yes, E&O is very important and you are correct that in your position, Sales Tax License would be needed. Many advocates don’t need that addition but as you plan to sell a product that puts you in that group. I didn’t start with Sales Tax License but I eventually added it…[Read more]

Hello future current and future patient advocates. After being in the health care industry for 50+ years and watching the industry morph into an unrecognizable conglomerate maze. Too many lives have been pushed, fallen or triped into the cracks the health care system, and I can no longer stand by lest i couldn’t sleep at night. I have…[Read more]

Hi Emily; I’ve had a similar experience myself. In two weeks, it will be a year since I decided to become a patient advocate, and I’ve learned a lot along the way. During this time, I’ve also faced many conflicting thoughts and what might be called decision paralysis. However, I feel Iām now back on track, with most of the necessary pieces in p…[Read more]

I definitely need to get a PO Box and ask if I can use the physical address of the Post Office. I 100% need to do my research on phone options because I don’t really want my personal phone number on anything. I don’t plan on being available 24/7.
As for the NAIC code, I’m stumped because I’m going to be doing something different than independent…[Read more]
