I am very interested in taking board exam in June. I am NOT in the medical field but after doing the practice exam questions i have noticed that Trish covers a lot of the questions. The rest was common sense to me knowing what an advocate can and cannot do.
Please keep me posted of how to enroll for the june datesThanks!

Hello, everyone!
Thank you for the energy from you all during our meetings. I LOVED the questions and the discussions we all had, and I can’t wait for Live Session 3 to see everyone again!
For anyone who couldn’t make one of the live sessions, I hope you can take that time to watch at least one of these recordings, if not both. Each session was…[Read more]

Those are all really great considerations, thank you both. I’ll pass them along and see if the family might consider alternative arrangements, with contracted companions or otherwise, to meet this need.
I’d still love any recommendations for more affordable companions in CA. If anyone is aware of other professionals I haven’t mentioned who can…[Read more]

As a rule, I don’t hire caregivers for my clients. I provide them with the names of reputable agencies and am often present when the client interviews them in order to make sure the agency understands the clients needs. The client then decides which agency is the best fit for them.
If a client wants to use someone who is not employed by an a…[Read more]

Same experience here. He originally reached out to me in October, did the same long extensive sales pitch including asking me to go to his website and had me watch a video. I was bothered with how much time it took me to get to the bottom of his ‘offer’. To pay a fee to their company to be exclusively listed in my area. Different amounts of money…[Read more]

Personally, I will not find private caregivers for clients. I only recommend agencies. Agencies cost more but they find the caregivers, do the background check, train them, provide insurance, etc. If a caregiver/companion doesn’t show up or gets sick, the agency finds a replacement. If there is a problem with the caregiver, the agency is…[Read more]

Hi All,
A client of mine recently hired a live-in “companion”. Unlike most caregivers, they’re not really there for the medical or ADL purposes, though they can provide non-medical supports (esp. transportation) as needed. The other key difference is they can be hired for essentially 24/7 in-person support on essentially a per-diem basis (with…[Read more]

Thank you for your assessment, Camille!
Being creative and working towards accomplishments, I interpret as a problem solver, very useful qualities! Not accepting “no” easily and asking “why” will suit you well. Many times it just takes asking why to cause a pause and opportunity to problem solve and get the help your clients want/need and…[Read more]

While I don’t thrive on challenges, I feel I am creative and work towards accomplishment and don’t accept no easily. I am a people person. I do have an entrepreneurial spirit. I understand the value I can bring as an advocate. My challenge will be the line between medicine and advocacy. I will need to practice this balance.

Patient Perspectives: Ehlers Danlos Syndrome with Emily Rubenstein
February 2024 Join us for a discussion with Emily Rubenstein who is here to share her story and help educate the APHA community about hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hEDS). On-Demand Recording: 50 minutes /*! elementor – v3.19.0 – 29-01-2024 */ .elementor-widget-image{text-align:center}.elementor-widget-image a{display:inline-block}.elementor-widget-image a img[src$=”.svg”]{width:48px}.elementor-widget-image img{vertical-align:middle;display:inline-block} Emily Rubenstein was diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) and endometriosis in 2022 after years of searching for an explanation for her chronic and worsening symptoms. Given how challenging her own experience has been, she is interested in how she can help others with chronic illness—diagnosed and yet to be diagnosed—advocate for themselves and receive the care they deserve. Emily works at the Aspen Institute, where she leads the Food Leaders Fellowship and previously supported the Health Innovators Fellowship. Prior to Aspen, she worked in educational testing and research. Hi, Lisa!
Great question and it can be confusing!Yes, that is correct. Completing the final lesson in each course, will award you the CEU certificate. If you are not yet certified and plan to be, then it would be best to wait since they won’t accept any CEUs that were completed prior to your certification date. For anyone who may already be a…[Read more]
