Hello everyone,
HealthyWomen has asked me to write a story about the value of patient advocacy. I need to include a story of a mid-life woman who has used patient advocacy services and benefited. It may be enough to interview the advocate, so even if you have a client who may not be willing to do an interview, if you are able to share the story…[Read more]

Elastic Bodies, Rigid Systems: How to Recognize Hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
May 2025 Part of our patient advocacy often includes helping people get a diagnosis for symptoms that medical providers might not easily recognize. Whether you have heard of it yet or not, Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS), especially hypermobile EDS (hEDS) or Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder (HSD), are among the most underdiagnosed, misunderstood, and misattributed conditions akin to multiple sclerosis with unknown origin and long diagnostic journeys. Led by Christie Cox, BCPA, an APHA member, author and advocate for the Ehlers-Danlos community. Hi – I’m starting a practice and considering going for the CSA (in addition to the BCPA, not instead of).
Interested in your thoughts on its value, whether you considered it and level of difficulty if you’ve done it yourself.
For background, my forte is insurance. I worked at a heath plan on the commercial side, primarily running online member…[Read more]

Hi there,
I assume this is for laser focal therapy which is not covered by CMS. HIFU which is similar is covered.
There are also numerous other treatment options for prostate cancer. The field has, for the first time in ages, finally had new treatment options.
Your client could consider one of those, paying cash for the focal therapy or going…[Read more]

Thank you for your self assessment, Mary!
Setting up a website can feel very intimidating, just remember it really can be VERY simple to be effective. Making sure you have a landing page that people can find you, with even simple details about you and your services is all that is needed. That and make sure to included that “Call To Action”. I concur with Jeff. Whether you have a policy that covers international care or arrange for travel insurance, you usually need to pay upfront and then have to submit documents for reimbursement. In terms of advocacy services, I am only aware of RCM Health Consultancy- they are based in Toronto and offer in person assistance. Hope this helps.

Some BCBS plans cover out of country. I have personally had medical care while in Canada and my BCBS policy would cover it. I had to pay up front at time of service in Canada, then file with Blue Cross’s Geo Blue service for international claims to be reimbursed.

Hello All,
I’m looking for any advocates that do in-person work in the Toronto (Canada) area. I tried looking through the PACB list and didn’t hear back from the couple folks there/it didn’t seem clear that they were practicing advocates so much as folks getting CE. I check in with one organization, “Canadian Health Advocates”, but they said…[Read more]
