I did have one case done by a “patient advocate” who is not in any of our professional organizations, just an independent one. Once I untangled the mess, I realized that this patient advocate had caused the real problem.
I think if I would have told the client that it was this person’s fault, they might have sued them. Instead, I told them…[Read more]

I recently tried to get insurance through Kyle also. His reply was less than enthusiastic and tge company he referred me to didn’t respond. I’m going to check with my local insurance agent to see what’s available locally. Do we know if any Advocate has ever been sued? The burden of proof for a liability claim based on omission would be difficult…[Read more]

As far as I know (or Kyle knows) there have been NO lawsuits. The problems we are seeing are a reflection of the general insurance marketplace, including the cannibalization of larger insurers eating the smaller ones.
One Beacon was/is in the process of closing down all together, or at least shifting themselves in the marketplace. We heard that…[Read more]

I’m definitely interested in comparison shopping before I renew this year, but back in 2014, Heaton-Bennett group in Austin was the ONLY insurance group that would even listen to me to get me insured! So I do feel really loyal to them because everyone else wouldn’t even consider me!
I haven’t received this year’s cost for E&O renewal, but last…[Read more]

I’m curious re the discontinuation by One Beacon and for the halting of new policies via Kyle/Markel. In my experience, the only reason for a carrier to stop writing a policy is because the expenses (including litigation costs) and indemnity (liability payouts) exceed the premiums collected.
In other words, I’m wonder if there have been any…[Read more]

I got a quote through Kyle; it was challenging to get a response from him. Then went directly to Hiscox (888-202-3007) – It was half the cost Kyle/Markel gave me.
I worked directly with a woman named Gloria Spraggins – Extension 785435. It’s a call center, but if you ask the person who you reach to message her she can call you back if she is on…[Read more]

Do you think your son might be interested in helping us explore this on a grand scale? I’d love to speak with him since I’ve got many thoughts and it looks like his firm writes specialty insurance, which is what we’re really talking about.

This is alarming, especially since I am in the process of starting my practice and have a non- clinical background.
This will drive up our prices or otherwise we cannot make this a true business/ profession.IMHO: Insurance companies look for ways to gouge consumers and businrss owners.
I am going to speak to my insurance Broker to see if he has…[Read more] -

@rrlinden I’m sorry to hear about Kyle. I am also using Hiscox but I think its less than what you’re paying Molly. What kind of coverage did you get? When Kyle told me they weren’t offering the coverage anymore and gave me a few names, I didn’t realize how hard it would be to find someone because most companies don’t really understand the scope…[Read more]

When I contacted Kyle about a month ago he suggested I go with Hiscox and that worked for me (I have no licenses). I’m paying ~$75 a month.

I would contact Lisa Berry Blackstock for the medical side (https://profile.advoconnection.com/advocates/stanford-soul-sherpa-healthcare-advocacy/)
And Martine Brousse for the insurance/billing side:
They are both long-time advocates in Southern California & know the ropes there!
Hope this person gets the care they need!

Some history here: When we got started in 2009, there was no such thing as insurance at all for advocates. I tracked down a trusted agent who then worked with a company called One Beacon, and they built a policy for us through our then-insurance advisor. It was a huge boon to our profession!
Ten years later, when we had hundreds (1,000 or so?)…[Read more]

OMG, $3700.00 for insurance. Thank God I am a nurse and can get coverage thru HPSO/NSO. I am so sorry that there isn’t better coverage for the non-nurses. Keep working on this issue.

As AnnMarie stated, we had a nice discussion about approaching NSO (and others) to demonstrate that there is a large, existing “pool” of advocates. The idea is to encourage insurance carriers to develop a specific insurance product for the profession. By approaching insurance carriers as a “union” of sorts, we might have input into the drafting of…[Read more]
