Optimizing for Search Engines (SEO)

Your website can’t be found by search engines (and therefore by your potential clients) unless those search engines can find certain kinds of information in your site. This is called SEO =  Search Engine Optimization.

For example:

•  Search engines can’t read graphics, they can only read text.  (and not all “text” is really text!)

•  Search engines are very interested to see who else is linking TO you (not who you are linking to).  That’s called “authority.”

Google has put together a great handbook for helping you understand what you need to know to make sure your clients find you.

Here’s a link to their 32-page “Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide.”

Even if you aren’t building your site yourself, it will help you have an intelligent conversation with your webmaster.
