Prepare to Help COVID “Long-Haul” Patients

Wednesday, March 16, 2022
<-- tomorrow!

Two years since we began to wade into the pandemic waters, and here we are still contracting the virus, and watching as individual experiences vary widely. While some get deathly ill, others barely register illness at all. And while some are sick for days or weeks only, never even seeking help from medical professionals, others are hospitalized, isolated, intubated, and spend months just trying to breathe easily again – or they die.

Now we’re learning about “long COVID” (also called “long haul COVID”) – yet another variation on the landscape. Symptoms in these patients can linger for months or years. They are challenged by getting past the fatigue and shortness of breath. They find problems with “COVID brain” – thinking and recalling. They may be at home, or they may be hospitalized. The list of symptoms goes on; the mental as well as the physical stress takes its toll.

How can we as patient and health advocates support these patients and their families? Does it make sense to focus on support for long COVID as a service we provide? If so, what services would those be?

Our discussion for this call will cover ideas for both CARE and COST services.
Gerda Maissel, MD, BCPA, of My MD Advisor, will discuss the many care-related services that we, specifically as non-medical supporters, can provide to clients before and after they are diagnosed with long COVID. She’ll discuss the unique challenges to this type of support, and how you can reach out to these patients and their families.

Of course, any time we discuss extended health care, we have to also look at the costs patients and their families must be aware of, and handle. APHA’s own
Jennifer Kastner, manager of our Medical Billing and Claims SIG, and owner of Patient Advocacy Solutions, LLC, will review the unique financially-related challenges of long COVID patients – what their families (and you!) should expect when this sort of diagnosis and care must be provided.

Reviews found on Amazon:

This is a great marketing book that is exceptionally organized, easy to understand and includes exceptional advice. The specific marketing strategies on public relations, creative ideas on developing and defining your brand and the wonderful resource list at the end of the book are just a few reasons why I love and recommend this book.

While the information in the book is basic - good for someone with no business experience - it also lays out a concrete path of 'must do' tasks for anyone starting a private healthcare advocate business and keeps you on track.

This book is well written, well organized, and contains valuable information for businesses in this field. I recommend it without reservation.
